Provost of the College

The current Provost of Federal College of Agriculture, Ishiagu is PROF. JUSTINA UZOMA MGBADA. She assumed office in January 2015 as the 12th substantive Provost of the Institution.

Professor J. U. Mgbada, a Professor of Agricultural Extension was born at Isuochi to Elder I. M. Ndubuisi and Deaconess Mary Ndubuisi from Ngodo Isuochi in Umunneochi Local Government Area of Abia State. She obtained her First School Leaving Certificate at Ngodo Primary School, Ngodo Isuochi; after which she proceeded to Girls Secondary School Okigwe, in Imo State, where she obtained her West African School Certificate with grade one. Subsequently, she gained admission into the prestigious University of Nigeria Nsukka, where she graduated in 1986 with B.Sc. (Hons.). A persevering woman determined to succeed in a male dominated world, she went straight for her post graduate studies immediately after her youth service with State Education, Anambra State, then Girls High School, Abakaliki.

She obtained her Post-Graduate Diploma (PgD) in Education, M.Sc. in Agricultural Extension from Enugu State University of Science and Technology in 1989 and 1991, respectively. To add another feather to her cap of achievements, this icon of struggle was crowned with a Ph.D. in Agricultural Extension from Enugu State University of Science and Technology in 1996.

Before her appointment as the Provost of the College, Professor Mgbada, worked as a teacher, Lecturer, Researcher, Planning Officer and Administrator. She taught in Abakaliki High School (PRESCO) from 1988-1992 as the Senior Biology Instructor. 1992, she joined the Enugu State University of Science and Technology as an Assistant Lecturer in the Department of Agricultural Economics and Extension. Professor Mgbada ascended and occupied the Post of Head of her Department from 1998 to 2005. After seven years of headship, she left for Federal University of Technology, Owerri (FUTO), where she served a one-year sabbatical leave between 2005 and 2006. At the expiration of her leave, she returned to her school, ESUT, and was reappointed the head of the department where she served again from 2007 to 2011, and was elected the Dean, Faculty of Agriculture and Natural Resources Management in August, 2011.

A versatile and professional woman to the core, she is a member of several professional organizations. Prof. Justina Uzoma Mgbada is a member of the following professional bodies:

Prof. Mgbada has served ESUT and the society in different capacities. She represented her faculty in the school senate ceremonial committee all through her stay in that University. She was a member of reconstitution of time table and space allocation committee, land use and allocation committee, and Public Relations Committee, Chairman, Convocation Lecture Committee, Chairman, Orientation and Matriculation Committee, ESUT, member, Senate Business Committee. She was also Chairman, Board of Directors, ESUT Commercial Farm etc.

Prof. Uzoma Mgbada, a woman of high calibre, was chairperson of family support programme in her Local Government Area between 1990 and 1992. She was the first Executive Secretary, Women Commission, Ebonyi State between 1997 and 1998, and served as a member, land use and land allocation committee of Ebonyi State (1998 to 1999), Member, vision 20:20:20 (2009), Chairman, Presidential Visitation panel to Federal College of Education (Technical), Asaba Delta State in 2012.

In recognition of her prowess in educational administration, she was awarded professional fellowship for educational administration by the Institute of Corporate Administration of Nigeria in 2005. She was also a vocational Awardee of Rotract Club Ekulu, Fellow, Certified Public Administrators of England and Wales (FCPA) in 2013.

The creative ingenuity of this pragmatic woman reflects in the number of her creative outputs. She has authored and co-authored several textbooks, technical reports and articles in journals. The interesting aspect of her academic achievements is that she was married immediately after her school certificate and had all her children during her tertiary education.

Though Prof. Mgbada is married to a man from Ebonyi State, she so much impacted on the people of Ngodo Isuochi in Abia State that made them to confer her with the title: “Ada Araka I of Ngodo Ukwu” by Igwe Araka I of Ngodo Ukwu Kingdom. She is a virtuous woman. Irrespective of her numerous academic and administrative engagements, she enjoys cooking, dancing, listening to music and helping the needy. She is a committed Christian and the woman leader of her Church.

Today, by the grace of God, Prof. Mgbada is the Provost of Federal College of Agriculture, Ishiagu. She came as an Apostle to work and transform the College into an enviable standard.

Prof. Mgbada is married to Hon. Chief Barr. Felix Mgbada (MON) and the marriage is blessed with four children: two males and two females.
